We all know that person who seems to have it all together. They don’t miss a beat, whether at work or at home. Everything is always in order and they always seem to make time for themselves, even if it’s just a few minutes each day.
But how do they do it? How do they manage to keep everything going and still make time for themselves?
The answer is simple: they make themselves a priority. And you can too. This year, resolve to put yourself first more often. If you’re not sure where to start, we have you covered! In this blog, we’ll go over some tips on how to make yourself a priority this year.
This post is all about the 9 effective ways to make yourself a priority.
Why Prioritizing Yourself Is Important
Before we dive deep into the tips on how to prioritize yourself, let’s quickly discuss why it’s important. At Living Cosmic, we believe that prioritizing yourself is crucial for a happy, healthy, and balanced life. We know firsthand how busy and overwhelming life can get.
It’s easy to forget to take care of ourselves, but it’s important to remember that we deserve to prioritize our own needs and desires. In fact, by putting ourselves first, we can better serve others and live a more balanced life.
Prioritizing yourself has a direct correlation to self-care and let me tell you now, self-care is not selfish. I will repeat that again in hopes you truly believe it. Self-care is NOT selfish. It’s an absolutely necessary part of living a healthy life. It involves taking care of your physical, emotional, and mental well-being. By making time for yourself, you can recharge your batteries and become more resilient to life’s challenges.
Another benefit of prioritizing yourself is that you’ll be able to better understand yourself. That means you’ll have the time to explore different parts of yourself, your needs, and your desires.
By exploring your interests and engaging in activities that make you happy, you’ll gain a deeper sense of self-awareness. This can help you make better decisions, set boundaries, and communicate your needs more effectively in every aspect of your life.
Tips on How to Make Yourself a Priority
Now that you know why it’s important to prioritize yourself, let’s discuss some tips on how to do so:
Set Some Goals
Setting goals is an essential part of personal growth and development. If there’s anything you take away from this blog post is that in order to grow as a person and keep getting better you need to set goals for yourself.
Goals provide a roadmap for where you want to go and how you will get there. It is important to set realistic and achievable goals that align with your values and aspirations.
Use the S.M.A.R.T. goals structure for creating your goals. When you prioritize yourself and set meaningful goals, you are more likely to feel fulfilled and satisfied with your life.
To set goals effectively, start by identifying what is most important to you. What areas of your life do you want to improve or focus on right now? This could include career, health, relationships, personal growth, or any other aspect of your life that you want to work on.
Once you have identified your priorities, break them down into specific, measurable goals.
It’s also important to make sure your goals are realistic and achievable. While it’s great to dream big, setting goals that are too lofty or unrealistic can lead to a lot of frustration and disappointment.
By setting smaller, achievable goals, you can build momentum and confidence as you work towards your larger aspirations in life.
Using a goal-setting template can be a helpful tool to keep you organized and focused. A template can help you break down your goals into smaller, manageable tasks, and track your progress along the way. It can also be a helpful way to stay motivated and accountable.
Remember that setting goals are just the first step. You also need to take action and make consistent progress toward your goals.
This may involve stepping out of your comfort zone, taking risks, and overcoming obstacles along the way. However, by staying focused on your goals and prioritizing yourself, you can achieve anything you set your mind to! Believe it, seriously.

Create a Routine
If you’ve read our other blog posts then by now you know how we at Living Cosmic feel about creating a routine. Routines are so crucial to your success (physical, spiritual, emotional, etc). You need to take care of yourself FIRST, always.
This may be controversial but even if you have kids and a husband or whatever it is you have going on, how can you show up for someone else 100% when you can’t even show up for yourself…
Think about that. Having an established routine helps keep you organized and on track. It can help make sure you have time for yourself each day, no matter how busy life gets. It’s your way to disconnect when needed and recharge to go back and do it all over again the next day.
Start by blocking off some time for yourself in your daily schedule. Make sure it’s something that will be easy to stick to—for example, if you know you always have 20 minutes between meetings, use that time to take a walk or read a book.
Make Time for Self-Care Activities
If this is not your favorite thing, let’s make some changes so you can look forward to your self-care activities! Taking care of yourself should always come first as I mentioned earlier. Make sure to set aside time each day for activities that make you feel good.
This could mean going for a walk, taking a yoga class, or even just reading a book in silence. These are all great ways to relax and recharge after a long day.
If you find yourself getting overwhelmed, take a few moments to practice meditation or mindfulness. These activities can help reduce stress and improve overall well-being.
Plan Ahead
One of the best ways to prioritize yourself is to plan ahead. I’m very type A and I live for planning. If I could, I’d plan everyone’s lives out but really hear me out on this.
When you have a plan in place, it’s easier to make time for yourself each day. Try scheduling a few hours each week for activities that help you recharge, such as getting active outside, or even just taking a long bath.
What I do and it works well for me, is I schedule my workout classes (Pilates and Pure Barre) in my google calendar a week ahead. That way I know this is “me” time and it’s on my calendar so nothing will interfere with that.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, try breaking your tasks down into smaller chunks and tackling them one at a time.
Create Boundaries
Before you can make yourself a priority, it’s important to create boundaries that you can stick to. Boundaries are HEALTHY. Take some time to think about what limits and rules you need in order to make yourself a priority.
This could include setting specific times each day for self-care, limiting how much time you spend on social media, or saying “no” more often when people ask for your help. Please stop feeling bad for saying no to someone, even if it’s your family or friends.
I’m extremely guilty of this and it’s something I’m working on but you can’t put everyone before yourself and lead a happy life. It’s not realistic and you’ll burn out and feel unfulfilled. Setting boundaries will help you set clear limits and make sure that you’re taking care of yourself first.
Make Time for Friends and Family
Making time for people you care about is also an important step in prioritizing yourself. Spending time with your friends and family can help you feel more connected and supported.
It’s also a great way to reduce stress and boost happiness. As a bonus, it can help you stay focused on the things that matter most in life. Sometimes all you need is a good conversation or even just a hug so call your family and friends and stay connected to them.
Put Aside Time for Reflection
It’s important to take some time each day to reflect on your goals and progress. This can help boost your confidence and keep you motivated. Set aside at least 10 minutes each day for reflection.
You can use this time to think through your goals and plan out how you’re going to reach them. You can also use it to practice gratitude and appreciate what you have in your life.
Follow Through
Make sure to follow through with your goals and plans. Make sure to stick to the routine and schedule you set for yourself. If you find that something isn’t working, take the time to adjust and make changes until you’re happy with the results.
An important part of self-care is also being honest with yourself and recognizing when it’s time to take a break or make a change.
Reward Yourself
Finally, don’t forget to reward yourself when you reach milestones or accomplish goals. This could be something like buying a small gift for yourself, treating yourself to a movie night, or taking a weekend trip somewhere.
Whatever it is, make sure it’s something that will make you feel rewarded for all your hard work.
